If, like me, you've been concerned at the Australian government's draconian moves towards net censorship, you should add your name to this petition:

http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/AddYourNameSaveTheNet

They will be displaying the petition in a massive ad in The Australian on Friday so they want as many Australian names as possible on it.

It's not too late to stop this descent into a nanny-state. Net censorship will affect you; it will slow down the internet and at the very least FChan is on the list of "objectionable" domains that will be blocked. And it will not succeed in its supposed aim of protecting children (how many times have we heard that excuse for limiting the freedoms of adults?).

For more information go to GetUp's campaign website. You can watch a clever ad here.

Can outsiders help?

You could donate to the ad campaign. Failing that, you could always write an email to Senator Conroy, warning him how this will impact on Australia's reputation in the rest of the world. (We would be the only western democracy to introduce a mandatory server-level filter.) Check this fact sheet for more information.

If these laws come in, I'm seeking asylum in the US!! lol

Seriously though, if this law blocks sites such as Fur Affinity or other furry sites. (That show porn)
My business would loose a lot of money!

I don't think they've considered business owners in this law.

Naw. Don't do that. You'd honestly have more freedom in New Zealand.. but can an Aussie live in Kiwiland?

In spite of our banter, Oz and NZ get on pretty well. It would be easier to migrate to NZ than elsewhere but still not trivial.

Good luck to you. I hope that petitions mean more in Australia than here.

No, they don't. But the full page advert hopefully will embarrass the government. There's speculation the government wants to quietly shelve it anyway. I think Stephen Conroy (the Communications Minister who's behind this hare-brained scheme) has been doing a terrible job in general anyway; he seems to be badly out of his depth and I think he should be quietly shelved himself and someone more capable should be given a go.

I signed the petition and also reposted the link and widget. I even broke my self-imposed exile to do so, to reach a wider audience. I also posted it on reddit.com (incase that helps).

Is that really still alive?

Wow, thought it had been killed off a while ago.

Why has this not been in the news? Will it only be in the news once it gets passed?

How the hell can we get around it when it does pass?

I always assume the worst, so let us all plan that it will pass, and work out ways around the censorship.

That is awful, they should just ban under 18s from the using the internet and save all the heartache 87% slower!!!! that would cripple business and communication.
