(I know I've been doing a lot of rat-related posts recently, but that's only because they're so darned popular right now!) [livejournal.com profile] porsupah has brought to my attention yet another rat movie doing the rounds: One Rat Short. Not really sure what to make of this one. (I never expected to have a surfeit of movies to choose from!) Going for a realism that they don't quite achieve, it looks moody and atmospheric, but with a bitter-sweet storyline of unrequited love that every rat can relate to. (Yes, Marko the Rat was not always as lucky at love as he is now.) It's going to be played at the Melbourne International Film Festival and as it just so happens I'll be in Melbourne for the tail end of that, I might get a chance to catch it there.

tail end indeed!

Nooo! They'll kick me out of the cinema and then I'll miss out on the ratty goodness. Besides, we all have to support it financially. I'll buy it when the DVD/BluRay/HD-DVD comes out.

(Like all good rats, I know where that icon comes from. I used to have it as part of my screensaver at work but I had to take it down, it got too upsetting for me.)

Squirrel and I watched "Willard" two weeks ago, and that's a tough one to watch, didn't like some of the agenda in the film. But it does seem like there are a lot of rat movies being released!

That's an odd movie, isn't it? Part rat paranoia, part celebration of rat strength. Not really sure what to make of it. It seems to be trying to keep a foot on both sides, and as a former Premier of our State was fond of observing, it's always uncomfortable when you're straddling a barbed wire fence. I was at least very impressed with Crispin Glover's performance in that one.

But I was appalled at the sappy ending where Ben lost. He may have been evil, but damnit, he was still a rat! I know where my allegiances lie.

Squirrel and I were appalled at that, and we couldn't understand how Willard could favor one rat and one rat only. I mean, my first rat, Constance, set me up for loving all rats for the rest of my life! But then, as Willard himself had said early on in the film, "I hate everyone except Socrates." So I guess that explains his thinking, flawed as it was. I also hated how Ben had the rats kill an innocent cat, but was very satisfied and elated when they tore apart the boss! If only we could do that to a lot more humans, I have no end who I'd single out for a fate like that ...! *malicious dragon grin*

I don't know if I want to see that one. Sad ratty films really get to me....

*so speaks the one who cried over the book ending of "Mrs.Frisby and the rats of N.I.M.H" and "Flowers for algernon(sp?)" and various other scenes and books. ("flowers" actually features a mouse but it still got to me.)
