Just installed Gimp 2.2.10 for Mac, upgrading from 2.2.8. Maybe it's just my imagination, but it feels like it's a lot faster than the one it replaced. (This has nothing to do with it now being a Universal app; I'm still using a PowerPC-based Mac.) Still not as nice as an Aqua port of Gimp, but apparently one is in the works once GTK for Mac OS X is finished. (Yes, I know about Seashore, but that's not a full port of Gimp and doesn't do everything I need.)

Hm! Timely reminder, as I'd been meaning to see what Gimp was like now, and I did make sure to include X11 in my recent Tiger installation. Do you mean it's "snappier", or that processor-intensive operations complete more quickly? (Or, indeed, both)

67MB! Whoo. It's not quite up to the level of Potatoshop, but it's getting there. =:)

It's snappier (ie, menus and windows open up a lot more quickly). I haven't really played with it enough yet to say whether or not it's making better use of the processor in general.

BTW, I'm using XDarwin so YMMV. I installed XDarwin in the hope it would make my X programs more responsive, but it doesn't really seem to have done much either way, other than taking longer to start up. (The best thing about playing with open source software on the Mac is the cute platypus you get.)

Just so all the IT-furs can laugh at me,...but "what does gimp do?"

GNU Image Manipulation Program. One of the flagships of open source. Sort of like an open source replacement for Photoshop. (Photoshop zealots get really upset when you say that!) I know it doesn't do all the stuff that Photoshop does, but it does everything I need at the right price and I actually prefer its much-maligned user interface.

Yes, I've seen those before. I thought the ratatouille one at the end especially cute. ;)
